Cookie policy

Every cookie and browser-storage key Asks sets — on this site, in the dashboard, in the embedded widget, and on hosted chat pages.
Introduction
This Cookie Policy explains how Asks ("we," "our," or "us") uses cookies and similar browser-storage technologies. It covers four surfaces:
- Our marketing website — asks.app (the site you are reading now)
- The Asks dashboard — app.asks.app, used by our customers and their team members
- The embedded chat widget — installed by our customers on their own websites
- Hosted chat pages — public conversation pages we host for our customers
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. We also use localStorage and sessionStorage — browser storage that works like a cookie but is never sent automatically with requests. For transparency, this policy lists all of them, not just cookies in the strict sense.
How we categorize cookies
- Strictly necessary: required for the service to work at all — signing in, securing sessions, and remembering your consent choice. These cannot be switched off.
- Functional: remember your preferences and state — theme, selected workspace, or resuming a chat conversation where you left off.
- Analytics: help us understand how the product is used so we can improve it. Only used where disclosed below, and on this website only with your consent.
Cookies on asks.app (this website)
Our marketing website is deliberately quiet: it currently loads no analytics, no advertising pixels, and no third-party scripts. Fonts are self-hosted, so no requests are made to font CDNs. The only storage we set is your consent choice itself:
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| asks_consent | Cookie (first-party) | Records your cookie consent choice | 6 months | Strictly necessary |
| asks-cookie-consent | localStorage | Detailed record of your consent choice (canonical copy) | Until cleared | Strictly necessary |
If we ever add analytics or marketing tools to this website, they will load only if you have opted in through the consent banner, and this policy will be updated first.
Cookies in the Asks dashboard (app.asks.app)
The dashboard is a signed-in product for our customers. It uses the following first-party storage:
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| auth_token | localStorage | Your sign-in session | Until logout | Strictly necessary |
| asks-oauth-result | localStorage | Completes Google sign-in redirects; removed immediately after use | Transient | Strictly necessary |
| asks_shopify_exchange_token | sessionStorage | Completes the Shopify store connection flow; removed after use | Tab session | Strictly necessary |
| sidebar_state | Cookie (first-party) | Remembers whether the sidebar is collapsed | 7 days | Functional |
| vite-ui-theme | localStorage | Your light/dark theme preference | Until cleared | Functional |
| current_workspace_id | localStorage | Remembers your last-selected workspace | Until cleared | Functional |
| asks_onboarding_wizard_* | localStorage | Saves onboarding progress; removed on completion | Until completed | Functional |
| ph_* (PostHog) | Cookie + localStorage | Product analytics and session replay (inputs are masked) so we can fix issues and improve the product | Up to 12 months | Analytics |
We use PostHog for product analytics inside the dashboard and Sentry for error monitoring. Sentry does not set cookies; it may briefly use sessionStorage while capturing an error report. Error reports are scrubbed of email addresses and IP addresses before they are sent.
We do not load Stripe.js, advertising pixels, or social media trackers in the dashboard. Payment happens on Stripe's own checkout pages (see "Third-party pages" below).
The Asks widget on our customers' websites
When one of our customers installs the Asks chat widget on their website, the widget stores a small set of identifiers first-party on that website's own domain. The widget never sets cross-site cookies, never tracks visitors across different websites, and contains no advertising or analytics trackers.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| asks_customer_id | Cookie (first-party on the customer's domain) | Anonymous visitor ID so your conversation history is remembered on that site (and, on Shopify stores with store-activity enabled, so support context can include your recent browsing on that store) | 12 months | Functional |
| asks:widget:customerId:* | localStorage | Canonical copy of the anonymous visitor ID | Until cleared | Functional |
| asks:widget:conversationId:* | localStorage | Resumes your open conversation across page reloads | Until cleared | Functional |
| asks:widget:rated:* | localStorage | Remembers that you already rated a conversation | Until cleared | Functional |
| asks:widget:sessionToken:* | sessionStorage | Signed security token that protects your conversation from being read by others | Tab session | Strictly necessary |
The website you are chatting on is the data controller for its own site. If you have questions about how a specific website uses the widget, contact that website's owner; their privacy and cookie notices apply alongside ours.
Hosted chat pages
Customers can share a hosted chat page (a public link served by us). These pages store the same kind of conversation-continuity keys as the widget — an anonymous visitor ID, your conversation list, and a session security token — under the asks_chat_page:* and asks:chat-page:* prefixes. Analytics session replay is disabled on chat pages.
Third-party pages you may visit
Some actions take you to pages operated by third parties, which set their own cookies under their own policies:
- Stripe — hosted checkout and billing portal when you subscribe or manage billing
- Shopify — app installation and billing approval for Shopify stores
- Google— the sign-in screen if you use "Sign in with Google"
We do not control those cookies. Please review each provider's own cookie policy.
Managing your preferences
On this website
You can change your consent choice for asks.app at any time: (also available in the footer of every page).
In your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies and site data in its settings. Note that blocking strictly-necessary storage will break signing in to the dashboard and resuming chat conversations.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Because this website sets no analytics or marketing cookies without your explicit opt-in, we treat every visitor the way Do Not Track intends by default.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy as the product evolves — for example, if we add a new tool that sets cookies. We will post the updated policy on this page and refresh the "Last updated" date. If a change introduces a new non-essential cookie on this website, the consent banner will ask again before it is set.
