Media that feels native: lightbox, video, and in-app PDFs
Images and video open in a proper lightbox with keyboard navigation, PDFs preview their first page and read in-app, and uploads now stretch to 16 MB.
Attachments stopped feeling bolted on. Photos and videos in the inbox and the widget now open in a full-screen lightbox — arrow keys, thumbnail strip, downloads, a real video player. Media-only messages collapse into tight picture bubbles with the timestamp overlaid, the way messaging apps do it.
Documents grew up too: PDFs show a first-page preview in the conversation and open in an in-app viewer with a page rail — no more download-to-read. Drag, drop, or paste files into the composer with a caption, at up to 16 MB apiece.
A proper lightbox
Media in the inbox and the widget now behaves the way messaging apps taught everyone to expect. Media-only bubbles collapse to a tight frame with the timestamp overlaid on the image — no empty text bubble wrapped around a photo. Clicking an image or video opens a full-screen lightbox with prev/next controls, arrow-key and Esc navigation, a thumbnail strip across the conversation's media, and a download button; videos play in a custom player instead of a bare browser element. In the composer, drag-and-drop and paste-to-attach stage uploads as previews with a caption box, so you see what you're sending before you send it.
PDFs read in-app
Documents stopped being download-and-hope. A PDF in a conversation shows a first-page preview thumbnail, and opening it launches an in-app document viewer: a scrollable page stack, a clickable page rail down the side, and keyboard paging. Previews are rasterized up to eight pages — enough to read an invoice, a return label, or a warranty card without ever leaving the conversation.
Bigger uploads, cleaner edges
The plumbing widened alongside the polish:
- upload types now include mp4, QuickTime, WebM, and 3GPP video, and all audio formats
- the max upload size rose from 10 MB to 16 MB — WhatsApp's own cap, so nothing a customer can send there is too big for Asks
- attachment-only messages get a proper icon in the conversation list instead of an empty snippet
- multi-attachment messages render one bubble per attachment rather than a single tangle
And across the app, images now load into reserved boxes with a fade-in and a proper broken-image state — no layout shift while a conversation fills in.
